Sky News Australia can reveal New Zealand Police are seeking a waiver of diplomatic immunity to lay charges after an alleged physical altercation involving an Australian diplomat's partner in downtown Wellington over the weekend.

"Police took one person into custody who was later released without charge after it was confirmed they held diplomatic immunity," authorities told Sky News. However, Sky News understands the event is viewed as highly concerning and being taken extremely seriously by the country's government. Article 32 of New Zealand's Diplomatic Privileges and Immunities Act 1968 states diplomatic immunity can be waived by the 'sending State’.Harinder Sidhu AM has been High Commissioner to New Zealand since March 2022.
