Dozens of New York University students and faculty members were arrested Monday evening after refusing to leave a pro- Palestine campus demonstration.
Protesters began gathering at NYU's Gould Plaza around 6 a.m. Monday to set up a "Gaza Solidarity Encampment," according to the university'sMonday, NYU spokesperson John Beckman said the unauthorized protest was "considerably disruptive" to the campus. Once officials witnessed "disorderly, disruptive, and antagonizing" behavior, they ordered protesters to cease efforts within an hour.
“Nevertheless, many refused to leave. We also learned that there were intimidating chants and several antisemitic incidents reported," Beckman said. "Given the foregoing and the safety issues raised by the breach, we asked for assistance from the NYPD ."the department received from NYU Monday on X, which explains the university considered all protesters "to be trespassers" after requests to leave were ignored.
