A trio of scammers has been targeting individuals near New York University, making off with a total of $3,500 in a series of robberies. In one chilling incident, the scammers approached a 14-year-old boy on Christmas Eve near Broadway and East 8th Street. They claimed their sports team was in dire need of donations, then escalated their tactics by threatening the young victim. Seizing the opportunity, they used a mobile app on his phone to transfer $350 to themselves before fleeing the scene.
Authorities believe these same scammers struck again on January 8th, targeting a 19-year-old man at East 4th Street and Broadway. They approached him with a proposition to exchange cash, then led him to an ATM where he withdrew $1,400. As the victim was leaving the ATM, the suspects snatched the money and disappeared on foot. In a third robbery, on January 11th, the scammers approached a 23-year-old man on Astor Place near Lafayette Street. They once again resorted to the tactic of requesting donations, then threatened him before demanding he withdraw $800 from an ATM. Furthermore, they utilized a mobile app on his phone to send another $1,000 transfer to themselves. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in any of the three robberies. The NYPD released photos of the suspects, who were seen wearing hoodies or winter coats, on Wednesday and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted through the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Information can also be provided online at the Crime Stoppers website.
