Perinton , N.Y. — Residents in Monroe County had an opportunity Monday to see if the state owed them any money with help from the NYS comptroller's office of unclaimed funds .

NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli had representatives assist people with navigating the unclaimed funds' database and file a claim. "Unclaimed funds are typically small sums of money, usually between $25 and $100 or so," said Alex Hipolito, a representative from the comptroller's office. "It might be left in a bank account, it might come from a utility, or something like that."By law, banks, insurance companies, corporations and many other organizations are required to report dormant accounts to the state comptroller, and must try to notify people by mail.
