An NYPD officer was shot Tuesday morning during a police standoff with a barricaded suspect at an apartment building on the Lower East Side . The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, where he is expected to make a full recovery. The initial gunfire erupted shortly after 5 a.m. when police officers arrived to execute a search warrant at the city-operated Vladeck Houses.
The suspect discharged three to five shots, striking an officer's ballistic shield. Despite the gunfire, no officers were hit, and they refrained from returning fire. Officers retreated, allowing the suspect to barricade himself within the apartment, employing a sofa to obstruct the door. Hostage negotiators were immediately deployed, and around 8:30 a.m., the decision was made to force entry into the apartment. Upon entry, the suspect opened fire again, striking one of the officers in the shoulder. In response, officers returned fire, hitting the suspect, who was subsequently apprehended. The suspect is currently on parole and has a previous arrest record for drug offenses. Police were investigating the presence of firearms at the time the search warrant was executed. District leader Magda Napoleon reported receiving numerous calls Tuesday morning concerning the heavy police presence. She expressed her concern over the incident, stating, 'The fact that there was a police officer hurt here today is unfortunate, and the fact that our community is going through this, I think there is an uptick in crime in this area that needs to be addressed,' Napoleon said.
