NYPD officer, civilian shot during traffic stop in Queens, police say
A police officer and a civilian were shot during a traffic stop in Queens on Monday evening, the NYPD said.
Officials said the officer made the stop at 1919 Mott Ave. in Far Rockaway at 5:48 p.m. when they began exchanging gunfire with the civilian. Both the officer and the civilian were in surgery on Monday evening, police spokesperson Carlos Nieves said. Their conditions were not immediately known. Mayor Eric Adams was scheduled to visit the hospital where the officer was being treated, according to City Hall. A press conference was scheduled for shortly after 8 p.m. at Jamaica Hospital, Nieves said.
City Councilmember Selvena N. Brooks-Powers of Queens said she had visited the scene of the shooting Monday evening. “Details are limited at this time, but we are praying for the officer injured as we await to learn more,” she said in an emailed statement. “Streets throughout downtown Far Rockaway have been sectioned off as NYPD investigates the shooting. The public is asked to avoid the area if possible. Please be advised that buses along this route may be rerouted due to the investigation.
