NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the shooter appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Brian Thompson from behind and opening firehotel where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, police said, setting off a massive search for the fleeing assailant hours before the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting nearby.
The shooting happened around 6:46 a.m. on 54th Street at 1335 Avenue of the Americas, police said. Thompson had left his hotel across the street by himself and was walking to the Hilton hotel's 54th Street entrance where the shooter was waiting for him, police said. The shooter had arrived just five minutes before Thompson's arrival."This was not what appears to be a just random act of violence.
