The creative team behind Apple TV+ series For All Mankind discuss crafting the sci-fi show's fourth season and bringing it into a new decade.
Summary The fourth season of the sci-fi drama For All Mankind is slated to premiere next month, bringing the series into the 2000s. The critically acclaimed Apple TV+ show follows an alternate timeline where the space race never ended, imagining what the future would look like beginning in the 1950s and continually leaping forward each season into new decades.
In the previous season we had the development of nuclear fusion, and this season we're going out and mining asteroids and really seeing what there is to be gleaned from an expanded ability to really utilize space. So I think those are exciting things. I know the time in the makeup chair has changed for the actors, but I'm curious if you think they approach these characters so many years later in the story differently this season?
And what do you think have been the biggest challenges for the returning actors because now they're playing someone 10 years later? From a writing perspective, what are the biggest challenges that come with moving a show 10 years forward every season? Garrett Reisman: We had a lot of cool conversations about how it was going to reject heat and it had to have a radiator to work.
Now, starting with season three, and now especially season four, we're extrapolated beyond where we actually have been able to go in real life. So now it's like, I don't know where the thing should be. This thing doesn't exist. So as a result, there's a tendency, I think - we could take more liberties, which is liberating. But at the same time it's like, well, I really want to make sure this is something that can happen. Even if it hasn't happened.
