According to a new report, traffic crashes in the city have killed 193 people and seriously injured over 2,000 more, more fatalities so far this year than in eight of the last 10 years.
A new report by Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets reveals that New York City has seen a record-breaking number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries in 2024, sparking urgent calls for action from safety advocates.Between January and September 2024, traffic crashes in the city killed 193 people and seriously injured another 2,338. According to the report, these figures represent more fatalities so far this year than in eight of the last 10 years.
"It ranges from things like losing the ability of a limb to losing a fetus," explained Alexa Sledge, Director of Communications for Transportation Alternatives. "Things that are very seriously life-changing for the thousands of people that it happens to every single day."In response to the report, the New York City Department of Transportation stated that traffic fatalities are trending down.
