New York City Public Schools Chancellor David Banks stated Wednesday that the system has no immediate plans to ban cell phones, despite a growing number of districts nationwide implementing such bans. Banks explained that while he and Mayor Eric Adams considered a student cell phone ban this summer, they ultimately decided to postpone it to further study the issue.

WASHINGTON, DC - MAY 08: David Banks , chancellor of the New York City Department of Education , speaks during a hearing with subcommittee members of the House Education and the Workforce Committee in the Rayburn House Office Building on May 08, 2024 in Washington, D.C.

We made a decision that while we see all the reasons to do it, now is not the time to do it," Banks said. "The biggest concern, Rosanna, really, is the fact that parents were saying 'if an emergency happens, I need to be in touch with my child,'" the chancellor told the FOX5 anchors.

“When there are emergencies at school, being able to directly communicate with your child to ensure they are safe is critically important and too often schools are dropping the ball on effective communication," NPU President Keri Rodrigues said.
