The proposal includes hundreds of apartments and room for potential expansions of the Whitney Museum and High Line.
New York City is planning to redevelop a 66,000-square-foot site in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District into housing and public space as a local meat market has agreed to end its lease ahead of schedule, Mayor Eric Adams said on Monday.
“We’re tackling generational, city-changing projects in all five boroughs, because our administration doesn’t shy away from challenges — we embrace them as opportunities to deliver for New Yorkers,” Adams said in a statement., which is ending its lease with the city early. Gansevoort Market Inc. President John Jobbagy said the building no longer meets up-to-date standards for processing and distribution.
Some 45,000 square feet could become home to the Whitney, which city officials said has a right of first offer on the market site, or facilities for the High Line, which runs through the neighborhood. Both the museum and the group Friends of the High Line said they were in discussions with the city about ways to expand their footprints.
