It’s the first day for students at NYC public schools.Over 900,000 city public school students are heading back on Thursday.JUMP TO: CALENDAR l LUNCH MENUThe year begins without a citywide cell phone ban, though school's chancellor David Banks says more than half of schools have some kind of restriction already in place."You're going to see the impacts on safety in their schools," Banks said. "You're going to see the impact on bullying in their schools.
"So, the question becomes do you lower your standards to get more teachers or how much more innovative can you get? You know, to to bring on 10 to 12,000 more teachers, It's not an easy choice."The teacher’s union points to I.S. 145 in Jackson Heights as a success story, where 6th grade classrooms have just 23 students this year, compared to more than 30 last year.
