New York City Councilmember Oswald Feliz has introduced legislation requiring the city to address discarded needles near needle exchange sites. Feliz argues that while these programs aim to reduce infection risks, more needs to be done to ensure public safety and prevent littered needles in parks, libraries, and playgrounds.
New York City Councilmember Oswald Feliz, D-District 15, introduced legislation Thursday to require the city to deal with discarded needles in areas near needle exchange sites, according to theThe proposal reportedly asks the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to create a plan to clean up hundreds of needles littering parks and sidewalks. Needle exchange sites offer clean needles to drug use rs.
“Needle exchange programs can be life-saving, but we must ensure these programs are implemented responsibly,” Feliz told the publication. “Communities should not have to cope with discarded used needles in our parks, libraries, and even school playgrounds, creating unwelcoming and unsafe environments for entire communities.”
“The syringe distribution program in front of the children’s library has created unsafe conditions, including illicit drug use and the discarding of used syringes in the library’s restrooms,” Feliz wrote. The legislation follows Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., calling on New York City Mayor Eric Adams this month to dismantle the "open-air drug markets" in the South Bronx. The congressman claimed in athe mayor would "never tolerate" drug activity outside his official residence, adding South Bronx residents should receive the same "quality of life."
