NYC lawmakers are proposing “a sweeping package of legislation” aimed to combat high commissions and other problems that local restaurants are seeing from food-delivery platforms like Grubhub and Uber Eats

The growing options for outsourcing meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking can be called time-saving blessings or culture-destroying curses. On Thursday, NYC Council Members Mark Gjonaj and Francisco Moya announced their proposal of a bill package that would require platforms delivering food from 20 or more establishments to obtain a license to operate in NYC, to limit their cut to 10% of each order, and to maintain other ‘best practices’ in this field.

Council Members Gjonaj and Moya described the plan during a press conference and rally Thursday morning alongside a group of industry advocates and small business owners who say they’ve been negatively impacted by third-party delivery apps like Grubhub and its parent-app Seamless, Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Postmates.

According to a press release, “The six-bill package is the result of a 10-month long inquiry by the Council’s Small Business Committee which was expanded earlier this month to include an investigation intoAmong other things, delivery companies have been criticized for collecting fees of up to 30% for online orders, and tacking on other fees that restaurant owners may not notice right away.
