The lawsuits filed by more than a dozen state attorneys general accuse TikTok of misleading the public about the platform’s safety for young users, and seek financial penalties.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and more than a dozen other state attorneys general have filed lawsuits against TikTok, accusing the social media giant of falsely claiming its platform is safe for young people, despite research suggesting otherwise, officials said on Tuesday.
“TikTok claims that their platform is safe for young people, but that is far from true,” James said in a statement. “In New York and across the country, young people have died or gotten injured doing dangerous TikTok challenges and many more are feeling more sad, anxious, and depressed because of TikTok’s addictive features.
A TikTok spokesperson told Gothamist that the claims made in the lawsuits are “inaccurate and misleading,” adding that the platform has tried to collaborate with James and other officials in the past.
