Kathy Hochul in a letter Monday regarding the Migrant Relocation Assistance Program .the governor to explain how the program ensures safety for existing residents as it transfers immigrants from New York City to counties throughout the state.

The congressmembers requested Gov. Hochul reveal whether program participants undergo a criminal background check or an evaluation concerning the legitimacy of their asylum claims. Reps. Tenney and Langworthy alleged an “overwhelming” majority of asylum claims are invalid and criticized New York’s sanctuary status.

“Under your administration, New York State has continued to operate as a sanctuary state and refused to cooperate with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport individuals breaking our nation’s laws by entering this country illegally,” they wrote. The governor also faced questions from the congressmembers about how she ensures MRAP enrollees fulfill obligations to appear in court, as well as the financial responsibility bestowed to county residents. Reps. Tenney and Langworthy provided Gov. Hochul a March 25 deadline for her response.for the program’s expansion to provide a "right to shelter." It claimed MRAP has relocated 100 migrants since its inception.

As a coalition, we recognize that the right to shelter is a floor, not a ceiling.
