The National Women's Soccer League ( NWSL ) is gearing up for an exciting 2025 season, with 190 matches scheduled across the regular season and playoffs. The action kicks off on March 15th, and fans will be eager to see the return of some star players. Among those to watch is the USWNT 's ' Triple Espresso ' attacking trio: Mallory Swanson , Sophia Smith , and Trinity Rodman .
This formidable group earned their nickname during the USWNT's gold medal winning run at the 2024 Paris Olympics under coach Emma Hayes' guidance. However, all three players have faced challenges with injuries, fitness, and availability in recent months.Trinity Rodman, forward for the Washington Spirit, has battled a persistent back problem since her rookie season in 2021. The issue has flared up periodically, causing her to miss several matches. Despite this, Rodman rejoined her team for the Spirit's final stretch of games last year and played a crucial role in their playoff run. Although the back injury kept her out of the USWNT's November friendlies against England and the Netherlands, Rodman reports feeling significantly better after a full offseason of rest and has been included in the Spirit's preseason roster. Sophia Smith, a 24-year-old forward for the Portland Thorns, has also dealt with her share of injuries. She suffered an ankle issue after the Olympics last summer, hindering her training and leading to her absence from the USWNT's final two games. The initial ankle problem surfaced in September after a Concacaf W Champions Cup game, forcing Smith to sit out for about a month before returning in October. With the entire offseason to recover, Smith is now back with her Thorns teammates for preseason. Mallory Swanson, Chicago Red Stars forward, while not currently facing any injury concerns, will miss the start of preseason due to personal reasons. The club has expressed full support for Swanson and confirmed she will rejoin the team when she is ready.
