Nurses are “desperately trying to save the NHS”, according to the head of the Royal College of Nursing, as thousands of staff begin two more days of industrial action.

“Minimum staffing levels are not available for our patients or our nurses on any day of the week,” she said. “So to try and suggest that we’re going to have minimum staffing levels on days of industrial action is just so far removed from reality, and in fact it is a total insult to our patients and to nurses – it just doesn’t happen.”safe staffing legislation to protect patients

She said staff “are working in a crisis every single minute of the day” and ignoring that was “living in a parallel universe”. “But there are 47,000 unfilled nursing posts in England alone and our nurses are really struggling to provide safe and effective care for our patients. So, what nurses are doing today is standing up and saying to this Government, to the Prime Minister, on behalf of Ray, on behalf of Alan, they’ve had enough, they deserve better, our patients require their care and treatment in a timely fashion so that they can get back to living their lives.
