Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia shares an update on the department's investigation into Saturday's shooting at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Open to watch live now.
Officials investigating the shooting have not yet revealed a motive for why the gunman started firing and why nurses were targeted. The arrest warrant affidavit has also not yet been made public.
Since the shooting NBC 5 has learned Hernandez had previously been in prison and was out on parole. He was still wearing an ankle monitor but had received permission to be at the hospital and with his partner while she gave birth. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirmed to NBC 5 on Monday afternoon that Hernandez was serving time for aggravated robbery and was released from state prison on Oct. 20, 2021. He was on parole with a special condition of electronic monitoring. He was granted permission to be at the hospital to be with his significant other during and after the delivery of the child. The Office of Inspector General is working with Dallas Police as they investigate.
NBC 5 has learned that Hernandez has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2011 including arrests for aggravated robbery, burglary, drug possession, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He remains in the hospital in an unknown condition. It's not clear if he's obtained an attorney.
