Nurses will vote again on Wednesday and Thursday on the latest offer.
United Steel Workers Local 4-200, which represents the nurses, reached a tentative agreement Monday, according to union officials. Nurses are expected to vote Wednesday and Thursday whether to accept the hospital’s offer. The strike is planned for Friday.
A deal would avoid 1,500 nurses taking to the picket line and potentially interrupting the hospital’s operations. But union officials expect a close vote among the rank and file. “I think they thought we could have gotten more,” said Judy Danella, president of United Steel Workers Local 4-200. She’s also a registered nurse at the hospital.
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital has offered pay increases, benefits and staffing guidelines, according to the union. Hospital officials were not immediately available to comment. The hospital is a 965-bed facility and the flagship hospital of its parent network, RWJBarnabas Health.There was some hesitation in Danella’s voice as she said, “We’ll see what happens night. I think it’ll be a close vote.”
