Kate Roughley, 37, denies manslaughter and an alternate count of child cruelty

A nursery worker accused of killing a baby girl told a trial she was 'distraught and heartbroken' after finding the child unresponsive. Kate Roughley, 37, denies manslaughter by ill-treatment of nine-month-old Genevieve Meehan, who was found unconscious at the Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport in 2022.

"I was absolutely heartbroken and distraught by what happened," she told jurors. Her barrister Sarah Elliott KC asked: "When the paramedics came and tried to resuscitate her, did you still think she might live?" "Did you think you were going to get blamed for it?," Ms Elliot KC asked. "I had a feeling they were going to try and blame me, yes," Ms Roughley replied.

"For example, moving the children too quickly," she told jurors. She added: "However, this never upset or hurt the children, it just looks a bit more like a rushed action more than anything." In one piece of footage played to the court, Ms Roughley could be heard chanting and singing: "Go see daddy. Go see daddy." Questioned on that flip, she said: "This wasn't just a one off, I sang it to most of the children when they were going to leave.
