Glasgow council has released the maximum number of new S1 and P1 children schools can take in August next year.

Large secondary Holyrood is accepting the highest number of S1s – 420 – while Lochend has room for a quarter of that – with space for 100 pupils.

Numbers also vary for primary schools with Hillhead and Knightswood taking 90 and Whiteinch accepting 25.Numbers have been capped based on factors including the size of buildings, population growth and making sure class size limits are not breached. A council report said: “At an operational level the council is required to plan for the sufficiency of primary and secondary school places across the city on a rolling annual basis with priority given to children and young people residing within the defined catchment areas. “Having ensured that catchment area needs can be met, then placing requests are approved in line with legislation and the council’s placing request priority criteria.

Today councillors sitting on the city administration committee approved the maximum intakes in S1 and P1.Speaking at the meeting, councillor Jill Brown, Labour, said: “For clarity the whole point of this authority that is being given to the director of, is to ensure that those caps don’t breach statutory obligations. So no primary 1 class will be larger than 25, no P2 or 3 will be larger than 30.
