The figures have been released after a Freedom of Information request

The number of potholes reported in Nottingham is on the rise and the city council has paid out tens of thousands of pounds in compensation over recent years. Nearly £17,000 in compensation was paid out last year alone in successful compensation claims related to vehicle damage due to potholes.

That is higher than the 1,836 reported in 2023 and the 1,280 reports made in 2022. The number of compensation claims received by the council remains around level, with 140 having been made so far in 2024. The figure so far this year is just £4,285.48, suggesting the amount of compensation may actually end up less than preceding years despite the rise in number of pothole reports. A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: "Potholes can appear on roads at any time, but they tend to be more frequent during the winter months. This is because damage is caused to the road surface by the constant cycle of surface water freezing and thawing.
