All Summer League stardom should be accompanied by one well-established caveat: Playing well in Las Vegas does not guarantee NBA success
Initial thoughts from the Denver Nuggets’ 92-85 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in their NBA Summer League opener in Las Vegas on Friday.: . Not playing competently, however, can be the kiss of death — especially for second-year pros like Peyton Watson. In that sense, the UCLA product’s performance against Milwaukee was reassuring, not just because Watson was productive but because he looked distinctly comfortable doing it.
One sequence early in the third quarter encapsulated those good vibes best, as Watson probed the paint for a floater, then showed zero hesitation the next trip down the floor while attempting to posterize 7-foot-6 Bucks big man Tacko Fall on a baseline drive, drawing a foul in the process. As for the two times Andre Jackson Jr. blocked Watson’s drives late? There’s always room to grow.
In that sense, consider Friday a mixed bag. While Gillespie had a couple of nifty herky-jerky drives, the shot was off, the turnovers were too high and the defense was so-so. In the 2022 undrafted free-agent signing’s defense, this was his first game in front of a live crowd since breaking his leg last summer.
