The NTSB is investigating a fatal midair collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and American Airlines Flight 5342 near Washington, D.C. New radar data suggests the helicopter may have been above its authorized flight ceiling at the time of the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB ) is scrutinizing newly obtained data that suggests the Black Hawk helicopter involved in the catastrophic midair collision with American Airlines Flight 5342 near Washington, D.C. may have been operating above its authorized flight ceiling at the time of the crash.

In a Tuesday update, NTSB officials revealed they received crucial information from Potomac TRACON, the air traffic control facility responsible for managing airspace surrounding Ronald Reagan National Airport. 'The TRACON integrates data from multiple radar sensors and ADS-B transponders, delivering the highest fidelity flight track data to air traffic control,' explained NTSB officials online. 'This data indicated the Black Hawk was at an altitude of 300 feet on the air traffic control display at the moment of the collision. It's important to note that this data is rounded to the nearest 100 feet.'While this data points to a potential violation of the helicopter's flight ceiling, officials stressed the need for further corroborating evidence from the helicopter itself. Recovery efforts for the downed helicopter from the Potomac River continue. Concurrently, the NTSB is meticulously reviewing maintenance records for both the aircraft and helicopter. Investigators are also diligently transcribing cockpit voice recordings from both the jet and helicopter. According to the Associated Press, the flight recorder from the jet recorded its altitude as 325 feet, with a possible margin of error of plus or minus 25 feet. The fatal midair collision occurred on January 29th around 8:45 p.m. as the plane was preparing to land at Reagan National, tragically claiming the lives of all passengers and crew aboard both aircraft
