New Trier High School senior Zoe Kozina, who has lived with a learning disability since childhood, has self published a children’s book highlighting the struggles and triumphs of those with invisible disabilities.

The story ”Your Beautiful Mind”, which she wrote and designed, follows Penelope the panda as she navigates being diagnosed with a learning disability and attending resource classes.Kozina, 17, had a similar experience after being diagnosed with a learning disability in math calculations in the third grade and was confused why she had to leave her classes while her fellow classmates got to stay.

Part of what makes learning disabilities so difficult, according to Kozina, is the invisibility of them. Once she reached high school, Kozina said she began pushing herself harder to limit the impacts of her disability. She started to see her grades improve and it began to reinforce her perception that she could excel.

“I was with her from day one, that first meeting in the third grade, until last year where they said she no longer needed an IEP,” Rachel said. “She doesn’t give herself enough credit. Obviously, there’s a community of helpers around us who really helped but honestly, it really is all her and all of her hard work.”
