Chief Minister Eva Lawler also says the government will provide an extra $7.8 million to the ambulance system to help it cope with demand over coming months.

The NT government will review St John Ambulance NT's operations, amid calls to deprivatise the emergency service.

The NT is one of only two jurisdictions in Australia where ambulance services are contracted out to a non-government entity — St John Ambulance — instead of being run by the government. Chief Minister Eva Lawler said those reviews had demonstrated a need for a wider investigation into whether the current ambulance service model was appropriate for the territory.Medical unions have described criticism of the budget blowout as "unfair", as the territory's health system continues to feel immense strain.
