NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey has taken aim at a casino tax hike for a lack of consultation and a failure to allow casinos to respond as The Star flags 500 job losses.
NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey has flagged a willingness to reconsider a controversial casino tax expected to raise $364 million a year, on the same day The Star announced plans to cut 500 jobs and tapped an investment bank to weigh up options for the business.and gambling tables in the state’s two casinos with a top tax rate of 60.67 per cent, Mr Mookhey slammed the decision for a lack of consultation and a failure to allow casinos to respond.
He also acknowledged that the tax hike had come at a time when the business had been hit with $250 million in fines and was on a remediation program to recover its licence, after inquiries in two states found it had failed to stem criminal activity and money laundering. The Star was fined $100 million and had its casino licence suspended in NSW by the state’s Independent Casino Commission in October last year. The move allowed the venue to keep operating under an independent manager, citing a desire to protect its workforce of 8000 employees.
