NSW will use Friday’s meeting of state and federal treasurers to push for urgent reform of the rules for the carve-up of the GST.
Already a subscriber?NSW has threatened to derail federal government efforts at a meeting of treasurers on Friday to get the states to pay for more of the ballooning cost of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as part ofPremier Chris Minns has demanded federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers explain whether the Commonwealth Grants Commission decision to cut GST payments to NSW and send an extra $3.8 billion to Victoria was deliberate or accidental. Western Australia is set to reap an extra $6.
“An absurd system like this cannot last, and it is in the interest of the entire Federation that we have reform.”While NSW’s goods and services tax allocation will be cut by $188 million in 2024-25, Mr Minns accused the government of dudding the state to the tune of $1.6 billion, which is what he believes NSW would have received under last year’s formula.
Mr Minns said he would push for extra infrastructure funding from Canberra, or additional money for education and health in response to less GST revenue. Windfall royalty gains mean NSW’s GST take will be cut by $188 million to $26.1 billion next year. An increase in coal royalties will see Queensland for the first time in more than a decade become a donor state in fiscal 2025, receiving 95.2¢ back in every dollar of its per capita share of GST.
