A mini-crisis on NSW’s power grid amid tropical heat late on Thursday has revived concerns about the ability to cope with next month’s closure of the Liddell plant.
The Australian Energy Market Operator had to urgently secure emergency reserve generation late on Thursday afternoon for NSW amid a burst of tropical heat, raising fresh worries about capacity of the system to cope with the shutdown of AGL Energy’s large Liddell coal power station next month.
Both states were classified by AEMO as reaching the second of three degrees of severity in terms of the scarcity of available capacity to ensure supply remained secure.it had secured last-minute supplies under its Reliability and Emergency Reserve Trader system to boost reserve supply and minimise the risk of blackouts, but did not say it had actually called on the extra reserves.
“All of this and it’s only 34 days [from] the scheduled closure of Liddell unit 4 on Wednesday 19th April 2023 ,” electricity market watcher“I expect there will be a number of direct conversations happening about all of this in the coming days within market participants, energy user representatives, government departments and so on.”
To keep power reliable later this decade, however, investment was urgently needed in long-duration energy storage, generation and transmission to fill the gap as coal power plants close, AEMO said then.
