The New South Wales National Party dumped leader Paul Toole in favour of Dubbo MP Dugald Saunders in a snap vote on Monday, only a month after a post-election leadership ballot returned the opposite result.

Dubbo MP Dugald Saunders was elected leader, replacing the member for Bathurst, Paul Toole, who had held the position since John Barilaro’s resignation in October 2021.

The snap leadership change occurred after Nationals MP Ben Franklin confirmed he would run for president of the NSW upper house – with the support of newly elected Labor Premier Chris Minns – a role usually filled by a member of the government. Mr Franklin has said he informed Mr Toole about his plan to run for the role and according to the Daily Telegraph, Nationals MPs believe the now-former Nationals leader sanctioned the plan - ultimately sparking today’s leadership contest.

However the position of upper house president comes with a car, rive, an expense account and a $143,000 pay rise, and Mr Franklin’s Coalition colleagues have accused him of committing an “act of treachery” for taking the role.
