The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Hermanus responded to an eyewitness report of three men who had been swept off some rocks and into the surf from the shoreline in front of the Windsor Hotel in Hermanus just after 5pm on 21 March 2023:
Jean le Roux, NSRI Hermanus duty coxswain, confirmed that the NSRI rescue swimmers and the SA Police Services responded and directed rescue services to the location.
On arrival at the scene, it was found that two of the men had managed to reach the shore and were safely out of the water. The third man was located and recovered from the surf shortly. He was taken to the NSRI Hermanus rescue station, where Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation efforts were commenced by NSRI medics and an NSRI paramedic. They were joined by WC Government Health EMS paramedics.The two surviving men were transported to the hospital by EMS ambulance for treatment of the injuries they had sustained.
The body was taken into the care of government forensic pathology services, and SAPS has opened an inquest docket.Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the deceased.
