CTE is a degenerative brain disorder that has strong links to repeated head knocks, and can only be definitively diagnosed posthumously. The Broncos icon, who was battered and bruised in 347 games for Brisbane, 13 for Queensland and 19 for Australia, is only 41 years old, but suggested on Tuesday that he is already noticing his brain deteriorate.
The man nicknamed ‘The King’ went public with his struggles last year after being told by doctors they were 90 per cent sure he has the heinous brain disorder. Speaking on a Dementia Australia panel at Parliament House on Tuesday, Lewis said the dial still needs to turn further when it comes to the approach to toughness in sport. “We need to train our kids smarter,” he said. “It’s not a badge of honour to go back out onto the field with a head injury, it’s sheer carelessness.
