NRL players diagnosed with a category one concussion will now face a mandatory 11-day stint on the sidelines, ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys has announced amid pressure to bolster the league's safety protocols.
The Australian Rugby League Commission approved the new rules on Tuesday night following a review of data and expert advice.
ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said there is “not a greater priority” than player safety, adding the new rules made the NRL’s head injury protocols “exceptionally strong”. Symptoms of a category one concussion include loss of consciousness, unsteadiness on feet and failure to brace oneself when falling.Category two refers to when a player fails their concussion test in the changing rooms, meaning they are unable to return to the game.
The criteria also ensures players applying for an exemption have had less than five previous concussions, no previous concussions in the past three months and no history of a prior concussion having a prolonged recovery.
