The Dragons five-eighth is arguing his case against a suspension for biting Stephen Crichton with his season and St George Illawarra’s finals hopes on the line.
Flanagan’s counsel James McLeod describes Crichton’s injury as a “minor cut to his nose” and consistent with the contact with Flanagan’s mouth. But he says there is no further damage that would be caused by a clamp down from Flanagan, and that it is the “logical” result from Crichton moving his nose in the key moment.
We’re also getting a physics lesson with Crichton’s 100-kilo frame pushed down on top of Flanagan’s 83 kilos, with McLeod arguing gravity dictates it couldn’t be Flanagan forcing the issue, and that he was “doing his best with someone thrashing around on top of him”.“We know there’s no excuse for biting … but our position is his involuntary reaction was to partially close his mouth,” McLeod says. “The mechanics of the minor injury that resulted are consistent at that.
