The National Prosecuting Authority has defended its handling of the extradition of the Gupta brothers.
The NPA says reports claiming that they have failed to respond to requests by the UAE are inaccurate and irresponsible.
Spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga says that extraditions are complex affairs, but they are on track to finalise the process within the time frame. He's called for the authority to be allowed space to do its work. "The National Prosecuting Authority wishes to assure the public that its team of experienced prosecutors working with private senior councillors necessary are working tirelessly to ensure that the extradition application in respect of the two Gupta brothers is submitted to the United Arab Emirates within 60 days in terms of the treaty signed by the two countries," he said.
"This process was preceded by a request for provisional arrest warrants that were submitted through appropriate channels as required. We have previously indicated that we will not be commenting on this process, in particular the legal dimensions thereof at this early stage. This remains our position."However, we have noted with concern misinformation and speculation which casts aspersions in the manner in which the NPA and it's leadership has handled this complex matter so far.
"We will not be distracted in ensuring that we discharge our constitutional mandate. We also want to appeal to the South Africans in particular the analysts, to give us space to manage this complex process and ensure that the two Gupta brothers are brought to South Africa to face justice.))
