Former Tory minister David Davis said the economy could suffer a near ‘fatal seizure’ if the self-employed are not protected.
Rishi Sunak, the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, has pledged to pay up to 80% of people’s wages if they lose their jobs during the crisis
However, Mr Davis said it was vital that the Chancellor found a way of extending that support to the self-employed.It is believed there are around four million self-employed workers in the UK.Mr Davis said that additional measures were ‘absolutely necessary.’ For Labour, shadow chancellor John McDonnell said: ‘It’s dawning on people that there are huge gaping holes in the Chancellor’s statement.
