It’s time to broaden our focus and see the potential of a genuinely global transition to dramatically cleaner electric transportation for all.

But an even bigger story is how quickly EVs of all types, including cars, buses, and two- and three-wheelers, are gaining traction in emerging markets, accelerating green industrial growth, leading to cleaner air, and benefiting communities.

. For my job, I am fortunate to get to travel to meet partners working to accelerate electric transportation all over the world. During recent travels, it was faster to catch an electric taxi in Delhi than in New York City, easier to catch a ride in an electric bus in Jakarta than in Berlin, and just as likely to see electric two-wheelers delivering goods in Nairobi as in Amsterdam. I say this not to pit global cities against one another but to name what shapes our perception of the EV transition. Stories of the global transition to zero-emission vehicles overwhelmingly fixate on the state of play in the U.S., Europe, and China. These large markets are crucial to meeting our climate goals, but what about fast-growing vehicle markets like India, Indonesia, Chile, and East Africa? It’s time to broaden our focus and see the potential of a genuinely global transition to dramatically cleaner electric transportation for all.Skipping a generation of older technology in favor of the latest version is sometimes called “leapfrogging.” For many people in emerging economies, their first phone came without the bothersome cord connected to a wall. Early cell phone adoption in many emerging marketsThe same concept can apply to skipping over polluting combustion engines. Rather than locking in polluting fossil-fuel infrastructure that will eventually become stranded — and risking increased oil dependency, volatile pricing, and worsening air quality — emerging economies can leap directly to much cleaner electric transportation. The economics make sense; the rapid growth of renewable power generation adds momentum, and local leaders are already pushing forward.African markets, switching to battery-powered vehicles could save over $100 billion annually in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia by favoring domestic electricity instead of paying for imported fossil fuels. Electric two- and three-wheelers are alreadythat “reaching our goals for a safe climate will require a massive buildout of both renewable energy and an accelerated transition to electric road transportation.” Through collaboration with renewables and minerals advocates, our work at the Drive Electric Campaign recognizes that the energy transition can center responsibility, accountability, and justice. Many of these exciting examples were supported by climate philanthropy, including support for research showing the benefits of the transition, technical assistance to governments and businesses, and policy support. And there is more exciting work to be done. By working with local partners in emerging economies through the, we can avoid the release of billions of tons of climate pollution while improving the lives and livelihoods of millions. Local leaders in emerging economies are already seizing the opportunity - now is the time to supercharge this momentum and leap towards a better transportation future together.
