When you think about Florida in November, you think about the arrival of snowbirds, not of a hurricane. But it's happened twice before. And Subtropical Storm Nicole could be the third.
In fact, a good portion of Florida was in the official forecast cone as of Monday. Only time will tell if Nicole will become a hurricane and where and when it will make landfall.
If it happens, most likely late Wednesday and into Thursday, this would be only the third time in history a hurricane has made landfall in Florida in November. November marks the end of the hurricane season and conditions like cooler water temperatures usually kick in by now to help prevent a hurricane from forming. Not that anyone would celebrate.
Especially people living in Southwest Florida where just six weeks ago Hurricane Ian turned places like Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island and Pine Island upside down, killing more than 60 people in Lee County alone. There are still piles of debris, boats in the most bizarre places you can imagine and blue tarps on roof tops as far as they eye can see. Hurricane Kate struck Florida on November 21, 1985 the latest United States hurricane landfall.
A cold front moving across the Mississippi Valley resulted in a north and eventual northeast turn of Kate, and on November 21 — one week before Thanksgiving — Kate came ashore near Mexico Beach in the Florida Panhandle as a minimal Category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph.
