There were many students who also had to endure, like the death of a family member or their parents being unemployed during the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why I think mental health support for students is so important. We know there is a direct link between mental health and academic performance.
Q: The state has had giant surpluses in recent years yet there are worries about a potential recession. How would you ensure the state is prepared to weather an economic downturn? What will you do for Californians who are struggling economically now? A: As a first-term legislator in the past two years weighing our responsibilities under these historic surpluses, one of the key investments I helped make was to strengthen the reserve funds to nearly. The infrastructure, tax refund, education, small business support and other investments we made are themselves historic and needed, but it was important to use this time to make sure we would guard against any potential recession and state fund impacts.
Q: California has the nation’s most strict gun laws and among its lowest gun death rates. What is your philosophy toward gun legislation? Have you or your family been directly affected by gun violence? A: Despite tragic and unacceptable mass shootings this year, we must appreciate a few facts. California remains one of the lowest incidence states in gun violence and harm per capita, in large part from our commitment to commonsense gun laws. As
