There have been many changes so far to how the planned network will affect the East Midlands.
"Our challenge to Government is simple, it should move as quickly as possible to get spades in the ground and bring benefits to local people sooner." Those were the words of Sir John Peace, Chair of Midlands Connect, after the Government announced a huge change to HS2's planned route through the East Midlands in 2021.
Recent claims that the second section of HS2 could be scrapped altogether arose after a Government document was photographed with details of a "savings table", showing the costs of each part of the project north of Birmingham. No further clarity has been given since then, and an announcement is not expected before or in the immediate aftermath of the Conservative Party's annual conference this weekend.
The eastern leg is the section of HS2 which is crucial to the East Midlands. The original plans would have seen new lines being constructed all the way from Birmingham to Leeds via a brand new East Midlands Hub station located at Toton next to the M1, a station which would have then served areas including Nottingham and Derby.
