The winner is described as a 'secluded grassy gem'
Nottinghamshire is blessed with pub beer gardens for a tipple in the sun. But there's one that can now boast the title of Nottingham CAMRA's Pub Garden of the Year after a competition to find the best kept within the branch area, which includes the city and parts of Broxtowe, Gedling, Rushcliffe, Ashfield and Newark and Sherwood.
It proved a tough challenge as judges assessed entries ranging from intimate little spaces bedecked with flowers to spacious, grassy expanses offering activities for the kids, but they eventually agreed on a clear winner. Country pub, the Plough at Normanton-on-the-Wolds, scooped the crown, while the Plough at Wysall was named runner-up. The Foresters Arms at Newthorpe was highly commended.Nottingham CAMRA chairman Steve Westby said: "The Plough is a worthy champion that ticks most of the boxes for what one would wish to find in the ideal beer garden."
The judges said: "The beer garden at the Plough features an abundance of shrubs and colourful flowers, a well appointed covered seating area and a small adventure playground including a slide, which will no doubt help to distract the kids and give weary parents a break. "Welcome umbrellas at each table also offer protection from the elements, thus enabling patrons to have a drink or enjoy the food for which the pub has already established an enviable reputation, without worrying about getting either soaked or sunstroke. The garden is bordered by high hedges and lovely mature trees, not least the majestic specimen that forms a centrepiece to this secluded grassy gem.
