Families of the three victims killed in the 2023 Nottingham stabbing rampage are calling for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer to reform laws and hold public agencies accountable. They argue that the perpetrator, Valdo Calocane, escaped a murder conviction despite a history of warnings and systemic failures by mental health services and police.

The parents of 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, along with the sons of caretaker Ian Coates, are also calling for public servants, medical professionals, and police to be held accountable after Valdo Calocane, who was suffering from mental illness, stabbed the three victims to death during a rampage in 2023. Calocane is currently serving an indeterminate hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
However, the families remain angry that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) did not pursue a murder conviction, which could have allowed evidence of institutional failings to be examined in open court. A recent inquiry concluded, revealing what the families described as a series of "missed opportunities" to prevent the attacks. They are determined to push for accountability and systemic reform.
At a press conference in central London, Barnaby's mother, Emma Webber, stated: "There is an undoubted miscarriage of justice that must now be addressed-Valdo Calocane got away with murder. No murder conviction, no trial, no proper punishment that reflects what he did. That decision robbed Barnaby, Grace, and Ian of justice, and it robbed us of the truth in a court of law. A seriously mentally unwell man, yes-but one that knew entirely what he was doing.
We cannot let this stand-there must be immediate recourse. The sentencing, the charging decisions, the entire handling of the case needs urgent independent re-examination.
" She added, "We will not accept that a triple killer avoids accountability through his own manipulation and legal technicalities. " The families specifically want to meet with the Prime Minister, Attorney General Lord Hermer, Health Secretary James Murray, and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to discuss the inquiry's evidence, the failure to hold professionals accountable, and potential legislative changes regarding mental health.
The inquiry revealed that Calocane had been sectioned four times in the three years before the June 13, 2023 attacks, yet he was repeatedly released into the community despite concerns about his behavior. A consultant psychiatrist warned in 2020 that he "could end up killing someone.
" Calocane had a history of violence and allegedly assaulted two colleagues weeks before the killings. Police who responded to an incident did not realize he had an outstanding arrest warrant. He misled medical professionals by refusing medication due to a supposed fear of needles, despite receiving Covid vaccinations. He was discharged from a specialized mental health team to his general practitioner about nine months before the attack after failing to engage.
Shockingly, the mental health team previously hesitated to section Calocane, who is originally from Guinea-Bissau, due to fears it might be perceived as racist. Emma Webber emphasized, "Every single agency failed, every single one, without exception. Mental health services failed to treat and manage, police repeatedly failed to act, agencies didn't talk, individuals chose to look the other way, warnings were ignored.
People chose not to care or be curious, and the fear of stigma and bias was placed above safety and duty, and when it went wrong, too many closed ranks instead of owning their mistakes.
" Dr. Sanjoy Kumar, Grace's father, asserted that Calocane "should have been convicted of the cold-blooded, calculated murder of innocent people" and deserved a mandatory life sentence. The families vow to continue fighting until all responsible parties are suitably punished
