Nottingham Forest drew 0-0 with Villarreal at the City Ground in their penultimate pre-season friendly.
The second half saw few chances at either end. Nuno Espirito Santo made a raft of changes throughout the half as players continued to build up minutes. Forest did have some positive moments, with Taiwo Awoniyi almost on the end of a few, but neither side could forge a breakthrough. Nikola Milenkovic: Only one of the summer signings to make it into the starting XI. Will have got a taste of playing at the City Ground with his first appearance on the banks of the Trent, and immediately looked at home. Very composed.
After successive relegation fights since their return to the top-flight, the Reds are hoping this time around will be different. The aim for 2024/25 is to kick on in the Premier League and get higher up the table. But pre-season has really shown what might be possible with the 50-year-old at the helm. His team have looked sharp, have been keen to get on the front foot and have put together some lovely passages of play.
It will be fascinating to see whether Carlos Miguel takes the No 1 spot. Nikola Milenkovic has been brought in to try to solve the Reds’ set-piece troubles. Eric da Silva Moreira looks a great find and Elliot Anderson can be an excellent addition. Further signings are expected to follow. Ibrahim Sangare: Looking more and more like the accomplished midfielder Forest hoped they had signed 12 months ago with every run-out this summer. Stood up to the test with the step up in opposition.
Callum Hudson-Odoi: Contributed to a positive start; Nuno has clearly used pre-season to get across the way he wants the team to play. Still a bit of work to do, but encouraging signs overall. Eric da Silva Moreira : Looked lively when he came on. Has impressed in pre-season and showed plenty of energy again.
