Nobody dropped to the bench could reasonably claim they had done enough at Bournemouth to start tonight. While Howe arguably picked an equally strong line-up as three days earlier, Forest made 10 changes and looked shorn of several automatic selections.And that optimism was justified within 20 seconds, when quick passes by Joelinton, Tonali and Almiron set Isak free.
The game was end-to-end, except when Forest’s fouls halted play. Willock was kicked in the back of the leg, causing what seemed to be a muscle injury. Then Barnes was tripped, then Almiron, then Tonali, all in the first 15 minutes. A distraught Willock couldn’t continue and was replaced by Guimaraes.
Forest looked dangerous without extending Pope again while United’s attacks were foundering as the game neared half-time. Two minutes later Guimaraes was booked for fouling Jota, who also got a card for waving an imaginary one. And a minute after that, Abbott was booked for hauling back Tonali 30 yards out.
Moreno was booked for pulling back Barnes as we finally moved the ball better. On 72 minutes Moreno blocked an angled shot by Barnes. We enjoyed a decent spell of possession, again stopped by a foul on Barnes, who was becoming more influential on the right flank.
