, Notre Dame and BYU are finalizing a home-and-home deal between the two schools where Notre Dame will play at BYU in 2026 and host the Cougars in 2027. That leaves no room for USC on Notre Dame’s schedule. Dellenger reported that USC and Notre Dame were close to a new deal similar to the one BYU agreed to. However, USC preferred to play earlier in the season before the start of its Big Ten schedule, hoping a loss would not impact its chances of making theas much as a later-season loss could have. However, Notre Dame preferred to keep the game later in the season, leading to a standoff that resulted in no new deal. It’s been uncommon for the two teams to skip a season. The two teams have rarely missed playing each other.
