News and notes as the Aztecs prepare for Thursday's showdown against College of Charleston at the NCAA Tournament
The College of Charleston Cougars are an intense, frenetic, spirited bunch, but the source of that energy is not difficult to trace.Asked about his favorite Kelsey moment ahead of Thursday afternoon’s NCAA Tournament game against No. 5 seed San Diego State, senior guard Jaylon Scott offered: “When he climbs on the rim and swings on it like a madman.”Added seventh-year guard Dalton Bolon: “Coach Kelsey thinks he’s 7-foot. He’ll be walking around with his chest out and stuff like that.
Bolon later crossed paths with Dutcher in an Amway Center hallway and said, “Ooooh, it’s the enemy. It’s a great day to love the Cougars.” The school balked and got a plane for its travel party: players, band, cheerleaders, athletic staff and boosters. The plan is to bus home. The school requested to leave at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The NCAA offered 3. They finally left at 5.
“Brian recruits my type of players,” Kelsey said. “They’re tough as crap. I don’t know if I can say that. Can I say that? OK, tough as nails. I’ve enjoyed watching them. They’re not fun to prepare for because they’re really, really good, but they’ve got guys that eat gravel for breakfast, man. Those are the type of players who can wear a Charleston jersey as well.”
