Police in Bergen County's New Milford are warning about a scam involving fake"Notice of Hearing - Traffic Violation/Toll Violation" letters being sent to residents. They say the notices are not legitimate. They may, however, appear official and often include a QR code demanding payment while threatening legal action.Among other actions, the letter says the recipient must appear for a hearing on a predetermined date and time or resolve the matter by payment before the set hearing date. If not,"additional penalties as permitted by law" may apply. Cases could be referred for law enforcement action if the recipient does not appear, it says. If you receive one of these notices, police advise you NOT: 1) Scan the QR code; 2) Click any links; or 3) Provide personal or financial information. Authorities shared a photo of the fake notice .
