Victorian residents in one town have been issued a warning to boil their tap water to avoid potentially contaminated supplies due to a burst pipe.

Coliban Water and the Department of Health issued the urgent warning on Wednesday morning due to a burst water main on Rennick Avenue in Kyneton.

“Coliban Water advises customers to bring water to a rolling boil before being used by heating the water until a continuous and rapid stream of air-bubbles is produced from the bottom of a pan or kettle,” the statement read.“After heating, water must be allowed to cool before using it. It can then be stored in a clean, closed container for later use.”

It warned of potentially disastrous health issues including gastro-like symptoms if advice was not followed.
