After trying ‘everything’, Carer Solutions founder and chief executive Jane Morrell discovered reformer Pilates.

ane Morrell is founder and chief executive at Carer Solutions, a disability services organisation. She lives in Melbourne.I struggled to find any form of exercise that I really enjoyed. I tried everything from personal training to various group classes, including spin, Zumba and circuit training. I wanted to feel challenged and move my body in a way that I hadn’t ever before, so when I heard about Pilates it intrigued me. I have been practising for nearly 10 years now.

Push-ups are the only thing Morrell doesn’t enjoy. “They feel so ‘un-Pilates’ to me. Does anybody like push-ups?”Yes – shoutout to the amazing Ingrid at Coastal Pilates in Rye, Victoria.I feel like a different person. I don’t know where I would be without Pilates; it’s my one hour of escape – from the world, my business, everything. I feel completely transported when I am there, and it’s the best thing for me mentally and physically. Maybe I need to go five days a week!Leg circles.

Is this a challenge? If so, I’m up for it. There are 34 moves that Joseph Pilates created that I have done, and after 10 years, hopefully mastered. Of course, Pilates has evolved a lot since then, with many new exercises. It’s what I love about Ingrid – no two classes are the same, and she’s always throwing in new exercises or variations. This challenges us to dig deeper and hold longer. I am yet to attempt the advanced boomerang, which requires every single muscle in your body.

Attempting Pilates in the ocean on a stand-up paddleboard and falling off repeatedly. Not much Pilates was done but plenty of fun was had.On the paddleboard – or does it not count, considering the number of times I fell off?Luckily, I’ve never had a major injury, though I’d like to count having to use the “magic circle” [Pilates ring] as a frustration.Go at least three times a week. It takes time to improve, and you must be consistent.

Any of my trusty old P.E Nation tops paired with my Oalka bike shorts. In my opinion, they’re the best brand of bike shorts you’ll ever buy. They are ridiculously good value for money, high quality and don’t ride up at all, ever. I own about 10 pairs – please try a pair. I promise you won’t regret it .Any moves that involve the magic circle – not a fan, as it means pain is on its way.
